India Warns Citizens In Canada To Be Cautious

India has issued a travel warning to Canada due to growing anti-India activities and politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in the country. The warning comes after tensions between the two nations worsened as each country expelled a diplomat from the other.

Canada declared it was looking into “credible allegations” connecting the Indian state to the murder of a leader of the Sikh separatist movement. India vehemently refuted this, calling the accusations “absurd”. Analysts claim that ties between the two nations have reached an all-time low after months of tension.

The majority of Sikhs outside Punjab reside in Canada, which has also seen a lot of pro-Khalistan marches and demonstrations. Delhi claimed that recent threats were made against some of its diplomats and some Indians “who oppose the anti-India agenda”. Indian nationals are urged to stay away from areas and possible locations in Canada that have seen such events.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that intelligence agencies are looking into whether “agents of the government of India” were involved in the death of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who had been labeled a terrorist by India in 2020. India reacted angrily, accusing Canada of attempting to “shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists” who had received asylum there.

The Canadian government acknowledged Monday’s modification to its travel warnings for India, but added that it was “part of pre-scheduled and routine maintenance in the section on travel health information.” Ottawa’s warning, however, advised Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution due to the “risk of terrorist attacks throughout” India.
