The United States and Canada, in collaboration with some indigenous groups, came together to address a major issue. It’s been a long time since coal mining in British Columbia was causing a huge amount of pollution. Thus, to tackle the issue, they form groups to study the whole scenario and then create plans to clean it up.

Disruption was a major issue with pollution caused by coal mining in British Columbia, Canada. It has contaminated the water and harmed fish on both sides of the Canadian-US border. However, the governments of both countries, along with some indigenous groups, have developed a plan to address the issue.

The plan the group came up with is based on the Boundary Waters Treaty.It is a long-standing agreement between the United States and Canada to share water resources. They want to form special groups to investigate the extent of pollution and devise solutions to address it. Furthermore, the discussion concludes with a very resourceful solution. All of this began as a result of the over ten years that native people from British Columbia, Montana, and Idaho have been pressuring the governments to intervene and stop the pollution.

In fish and eggs in Montana’s Kootenai River, which flows downstream from a lake that shares the border between the United States and Canada, scientists discovered a substance known as selenium. This coal-mining-derived chemical is toxic to fish and birds that consume it. It’s significant to some indigenous tribes because they depend on these fish for food. Long-term increases in pollution are mostly due to coal mines in the Elk River valley of British Columbia. The Kootenai River, which flows from the Elk River into Idaho, Montana, and finally the Columbia River, is where it ends.

Environmentalists are pleased with this plan because they have long been pleading with governments to take action. I would not only help the species to live peacefully but also secure the natural flow of water.

However, the company responsible for a lot of this pollution, Teck, isn’t directly involved in the plan because it’s in the process of selling its coal business to another company. However, they can still give information to the special groups studying the issue.
